Creating a Cohesive, Sustainable Identity for Liberty Property Trust

In the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Viridian’s resilient landscapes unify two distinctive properties owned by one developer, reinforcing the client’s brand and values.

Where Sustainability Meets Performance

Liberty Property Trust, one of Philadelphia's most impactful developers, tasked Viridian with creating beautiful, high-performance landscapes for two flagship properties in the Navy Yard. Our designs balance the needs of both the developer and tenants, enhance the architectural vision, integrate with the Navy Yard's stormwater system, and even deter an overly active deer population.

Seating areas near the building entries create places for employees to gather outside the office.

Trees, natural grasses, and planted walkways reduce the heat-island effect and make parking safer for Axalta employees.

Reinforcing a Mission, a Building, & Civic Infrastructure

At the Axalta Global Innovation Center, the world’s largest coatings research and development lab, Viridian developed a vibrant, sweeping landscape inspired by their groundbreaking work in color technologies. Organized in bands of shifting year-round color, the densely planted landscape echoes the sweeping arc of the building’s curved facade, reinforces safe pedestrian circulation, and reduces stormwater runoff — a major priority in the Navy Yard. The low-maintenance plants create a riverine ecosystem supporting native species and comforting Axalta employees.

Uniting a Corporate Campus

At 400 Rouse, a massive research laboratory nearby, we developed a complementary yet distinct landscape language. New trees, waves of tufted grass, and rain gardens lower operating costs by mitigating the urban heat island effect, while plants like inkberry, purple coneflower, and hyssop create a landscape that evolves with the seasons. With their strong forms and vibrant colors, these native plants illustrate how sustainable landscapes cultivate a softer, more welcoming corporate campus.

Viridian’s work at the Navy Yard demonstrates how thoughtful and strategic landscape design can enhance corporate properties, improve tenant experiences, and reinforce a developer’s commitment to sustainability. By integrating beauty, functionality, and environmental performance, Liberty Property Trust’s landscapes become more than just green spaces—they represent a lasting investment in resilience, identity, and well-being.
