A Landscape That Welcomes, Heals,
and Inspires for the Beacon Unitarian Universalist Congregation
The Beacon Unitarity Universalist Congregation in Summit, New Jersey, is committed to uplifting all people and building a more sustainable, inclusive, and connected world for the next generation — a mission close to our hearts at Viridian. To support the congregation's expansion into a larger sanctuary, we designed a landscape that complements their new building and amplifies their values, so Beacon's light can shine even brighter.
A Sustainable and Sacred Landscape
We're helping Beacon realize its vision for a fossil-fuel-free campus through a landscape that nourishes the spirit and the planet. Porous hardscaping, underground water storage, and rain gardens manage water responsibly, while beautiful native plantings support biodiversity. A solar canopy further advances Beacon's sustainability goals and creates a shaded place for gathering and reflection. These interventions touch the ground lightly, honoring the quiet power and beauty of natural ecosystems.

A solar canopy provides a shady place to play — and clean energy.

Designed to Support Human Connection and Growth
The landscape engages the congregation at every scale. A great lawn invites gathering, performance, and celebration, while more secluded spots provide moments of quiet contemplation. A nature-based play area encourages exploration of new ideas, while a memorial walk weaves in old stories, from the Ramapo Munsee Lenape Nation to present-day congregation members. These spaces don't dictate activity; they create opportunities so the site can evolve with the community.
At Beacon, quiet spaces for personal reflection are just as important as communal spaces for group celebration.
Wholeness Through Diversity — Architecture and Landscape
By working alongside the architects from the project's earliest stages, we were able to integrate the landscape with the building's design. Indoor circulation becomes outdoor pathways, linking classrooms and worship spaces with spaces for outdoor gatherings, reinforcing Beacon's holistic nature. Hardscaping echoes the warmth of the building's materials, including a labyrinth framed by the curving entry — together conveying a sense of welcome and respect for individual spiritual journey.

At the entry, a meditative labyrinth complements the building's curving design.
